Reviews don't tell you if your dentist was disciplined. We do.

SmilesAtlas matches detailed practice profiles to the federal NPI registry and, where a state publishes usable records, its dental board. See license status, published board actions, ownership signals, and practice-reported services before you call.

Four details to check before you book

01

License status

Active, lapsed, or revoked, straight from the Texas, California, or Florida dental board. We match each dentist's federal NPI to the board's own license file.

02

Disciplinary history

550 dentists in our directory have a board action on record. We surface it with a link to the official order, instead of burying it under five stars.

03

Who owns the practice

About 1 in 26 “local” practices is owned by a dental service organization. We flag the chains so you know who you are really booking.

04

Insurance & services

Plans and procedures explicitly published on a practice's own website, when available. Always confirm network status directly.

Frequently asked questions

Is SmilesAtlas free?
Yes. Browsing, the license and disciplinary checks, and the ownership flags are all free. Dentists cannot pay to rank higher or to hide a disciplinary action.
How do you check a dentist's license?
We match each dentist's federal NPI number to the state dental board's own license file (Texas, California, and Florida publish one), then show the status the board reports plus any disciplinary action, with a link to the official record. Where a state does not publish a roster, like New York, we say the license is not independently verified rather than guess.
What is a DSO, and why does it matter?
A dental service organization is a company that owns and runs dental practices, often backed by private equity. The dentist's name may be on the door, but a chain sets the targets. Studies link corporate ownership to more aggressive treatment plans, so we flag it from public business records.
Where do the reviews and hours come from?
Ratings, review counts, and hours come from each practice's public Google listing. Accepted insurance, services, and technology are read from the practice's own website. We only show what is published, and never invent a value.
Do dentists pay to be listed?
No. Detailed profiles are selected from public NPI records and dentists cannot pay for inclusion, ranking, or removal of a verified fact.
Which states are covered?
Texas, California, Florida, and New York today: 133,305 dental providers. More states are added as we verify them.
